'sposed to be carbon dated at 45,000 years old. Comes with a bit of paper an all.

Very wet, quite soft .. as you can see from the end-grain fur.

Got some interesting white flecks and one nice swirl of spring and summer growth.

I think you're eventually going to have a nice piece there, Ern. When I talked with Jamie Donaldson this weekend he said that the Kauri he had was one of the only woods that he put a shiny finish on because it really brought out the figure.

How are things in Melbourne? I was there in 1979 when the company I worked for at the time bought some old former Quantas DC-4s which we flew back to the US...dead reckoning if you know what that is. Wonderful city it is and wonderful people as well. Wish I could afford another visit.

Cyril, yes it does take a good finish; the bowls I've seen have good chatoyance.

As for Melb., you wouldn't recognise it now. Lots of urban sprawl, lots more big city buildings - but the Yarra River has been cleaned up and made more accessible and downtown is much more cosmopolitan.

Ern,
Nice one, it should come up real well with your favourite DO finish.

Afew links for those who would like to look further into this amazing timber.
There is occiasionally Kauri found that is called "Kauri of a thousand lights"It rare and can easily be indentified by the irredescence of the grain structure. The grain literally dances with light as it is turned in the sun.
