Turning is a very dynamic process - and tricky to visualize - from still images. And while still pictures can convey a great deal about the static piece resulting from that dynamic process, photos can only convey SOME of what the piece looks like - from a single vantage point - or two.
Video, on the other hand, can provide continuously changing vantage points - and can convey even more of the piece to a viewer.
But it's dynamic pieces - ones that change - by movement - or appearance - or have changing sounds - or colors - that CAN'T be conveyed with a few photos. And pieces that involve its "audience" with actual interaction can't be adequately shown with just still images.
As digital still cameras prices dropped, turners could more easily photograph their pieces. And as turning web sites added the ability to include photos, more photos of turnings could be shared amongst the turning community.
Now digital video cameras have become affordable and software to put together and share videos of pieces is happening. With internet access bandwidth climbing yet remaining affordable, video - of pieces - and their making are possible.
In addition to showing photos of contributors pieces, this AAW site has videos available of symposiums and turning tutorials. So the capabilities for adding other videos to other areas of the site - the forums - is already here.
What additional effort and capabilities would be needed to incorporate video to a forum - similar to the photos gallery?
Here's a link to a YouTube video of a dynamic interactive pieces I did that can't adequately be conveyed with a few still photos.
