Kurt,
Here are my results. Hope it's what you are looking for. John
This was a tough contest to judge. A lot of skill was required to turn all of these ornaments and they were all well done. I could see it was going to be difficult. I looked mostly at the forms and how all the parts worked together. Since the work had to be pierced, hollowed, pyrographed, or carved I looked at those details to see how well they were done and did they fit the ornament. Then I flipped a coin. No, just kidding on that.
1st Place wasn’t too difficult. I picked Kurt Hertzog. The egg form is very well done. The decreasing size of the finial parts make it appear to be dripping. The piercing was well done and the color is well done. The finial doesn’t appear to be too long or too short.
2nd Place was Hal Taylor. The shape of the ball is very nice with a mostly rounded shape but the top lift and the bottom pushed out section made it a very interesting shape which flows into the finials. I very much like the way the top and bottom finials start the same size and have a similar shape. The icicle is very nice although I would like to see it taper thinner near the bottom. I like the bottom bead detail. The decreasing size makes them flow toward the bottom very nicely.
3rd Place was more difficult. A lot of tough decisions but I finally decided on JerryG. The segmenting appears to be very well done although the photo could not be enlarged to really check on that. Normally I would not like a ball that is a little off round but this one sort of follows the curves of the segmented details. I liked that. The icicle shape seems to compete with the segments but did fit the competition and was well turned. A lot of skill went into this piece.
Robert Davis’s ornament is well done. I turn a lot of inside out pieces and he's done a good job. I like the captured parts and like to see people do that with inside out turnings. I couldn’t see the details in the captured parts to make a good decision on how well they were done. Good photography can pay off. My criticism is that the ball shape doesn’t really go with the finial. I think it’s because the somewhat oval shape doesn’t allow itself to flow into the finial or vice/versa. The top and bottom finials mimic each other which is a good detail but somehow the ball seems like a separate shape that doesn’t go with the other two. Excellent job Robert, your skills are obvious.
The Bernie Hrytzak ornament shows a lot of skill. A carved spiral of that size is hard to do well. This one looks nice. It’s always nice to see a well done inside out turning. Although each part was well done they didn’t seem to flow together.
George Morris made a very nice ornament. I love that the top finial looks like a Christmas tree. The ball is well done and the finial is well turned. If the bottom finial started out as wide as the top finial and then tapered down to it’s bottom size your eye would flow through the ornament better. Possibly making the bottom finial one section longer would help that line as well.
