I need guidance concerning transportation to the symposium in Hartford.
I’m coming with a friend, Chris West, from the UK. We are flying into Boston on the Monday before the symposium and having a couple of days sightseeing. We then intend to travel to Hartford on Thursday 17th. My initial thoughts are to book a Peter Pan or Greyhound coach but I would like to know if there is any other way, like a train service, available to us (apart from hiring a car).
Thanks in anticipation,🙂
Ian Woodford.

Boston - Hartford

Ian - unfortunately, trains in the US are in no way similar in frequency or timeliness to what you are used to in the UK or Europe.

I am somewhat familiar with the Boston area (mother-in-law still lives there) . There are several bus lines with very regular runs between Boston and Hartford. Some are 7 times per day (2 hr trip)and cost about $15 US each way. I am sure that you could make arrangements once you are running about Boston, but I'm sure that you can reserve ahead also. In addition to Peter Pan, there also is www.gotobus.com.

Boston is a great city to visit. Another suggestion is a rental car. Rental cars are not nearly as expensive in the US as in the UK. (I have spent a lot to rent at the Manchester Airport!!!) Driving in the US is a piece of cake (even Boston!) compared to England. Our "roundabouts" generally are large and have only a few intersecting streets!

Check out the driver's license requirements. It might make your trip more flexible. A midsized rental car via Thrifty for June 14 -20 is about $235. Check www.expedia.com for other rates.

Boston To Hartford

Dear Ian: Welcome to the Colonies. Amtrak runs between Boston and Hartford. It is a 2 hour 20 minute trip that runs from $30 to 60 US. depending on time and day. Google Amtrak Boston for a full schedule. Boston is one of my favorite cities. Be sure to walk the Italian north end. The food is wonderful. While your in the north end, stop by the Old North Church. This is the church that Paul Revere had the two laterns hung from to signal the British move by water that led to Lexington and Concord. If you tell someone on the street that your from the UK, perhaps they will yell that " The British are coming! The British are coming! Enjoy your stay with us Ian. We are always ready to welcome our friends from around the world. Paul M. Kaplowitz

getting to Hartford

Hi Ian,
If it was me, I would look at the Peter Pan Bus Co. website. I (and many people I know) have had nothing but trouble with Amtrack (train). Peter Pan has been in the area for years and has a good reputation for service. Enjoy your stay in Boston.

Maybe you could meet up with some local AAW members, or part of the 'turning family.'

If I wasn't in the opposite direction of Boston (from Hartford) I would offer you guys rides back and forth....

I agree that Amtrak is probably not the best option.

Hi Guys, thanks to everyone who has contacted me via this post and by email.
What I originally wanted was ideas on the best way by public transport but thanks to Nigel Howe we now have been offered a lift. An offshoot of this is that we have expanded our "family" of AAW members and we plan to meet up with several of you in Hartford. This has the makings of a very good symposium for Chris and me.😀
Ian.
