There was recently a discussion on another forum (WOW) about the 2006 Special Exhibition, description and application forms here
While the title "Step Up to the Plate" is commonly associated with baseball, the phrase is not exclusive to baseball. When I crafted the webpage I had suggested to the exhibition committee that we add something about baseball. But I learned something from that suggestion. The exhibition committee requested I keep the baseball add-in out of the description.
Step Up to the Plate is also used to describe people who take charge of a situation or who volunteer to participate in an activity which they originally were not going to participate in. For example:
- "UN agencies urge G8 leaders to step up to the plate on African hunger, global
warming."
- "Corporate and business heroes step up to the plate."
- "We need to step up to the plate and take responsibility for informing and educating..."
The exhibition is not specifically baseball oriented, although I'm sure that many will submit some interesting baseball-themed entries.
I think it would have been more useful to have the question asked on the AAW forum since this will be an AAW exhibition. Anyhow, it's answered here as well.
