Some of you who use Google a lot may have discovered iGoogle, your own customized Google home page where you can add "Gadgets" of all sorts.
Examples include CNN News headlines, Phases of the Moon, Joke of the Day, Babelfish Translation, Flickr.com's Interesting Photos of the Day, National Geographic's POD, etc. etc. -- there are probably hundreds of these to choose from as new ones keep being added each day.
Just for a fun personal project, I learned how to create one of these Gadgets using Google's developer tools and my first project was an AAW POD Gadget (Photo Of the Day). It simply grabs the AAW POD from the front page and adds it to your customized iGoogle page. The gadget's title, image, and caption are hot-linked back to the AAW homepage so it can act as a draw for visitors to the site. Gadgets can be registered into the Google Gadget Directory, which I have done but it will take about 10 days for it to appear. A gadget's ranking in the Directory is dependent on it's popularity so it likely won't be seen near the top of the list. But the iGooglers who read this post will at least know it's available. Just go to:
Get Your AAW POD Gadget Here!
That will bring you to a page on Google with a button to add this Gadget to your iGoogle page--or if you don't use iGoogle, but do use Google as a search engine, you have the option to view this on the standard Google search page.
I have to edit the Gadget manually to update the image, so hopefully I'll keep it current on a regular basis.
Enjoy!

Something else that I need to learn about!

Well, time to waddle off to my swamp to mull this over.

dinosaur-world.jpg

Funny, but time seems to be passing me by ... I am beginning to feel like a ... uh ... what's the word?

I'm with Bill. I'm a dinasour and don't understand why anyone would even be interested in that sort of thing. More luck to you if you are. I have some sort of mental block on learning new things on the computer. I find it extremely difficult and don't understand why.
My boss changes my screen saver all the timewhich drives me crazy. I guess he thinks it's cool.
My secretary just spent an outrageous amount of money on a new phone that as near as I can tell still works like a phone.
Me I'd rather buy an antique hand plane and tune it up. 🙂

For Bill and John

If you are an "iGoogle"/ Firefox user it's a snap. If you are content with your current browser the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" rule applies.

The Picture of the Day appears front and center of my home page, kinda' neat.

Bill and John, you guys are a riot 😀
You know that doing stuff on the computer exercises your brain? Helps prevent Atheism, um... Altruism, err... forgot what it's called...

Thanks everyone for your comments!

Thanks Ken.
I've moved some of the depressing news headlines down the page to accomodate this one.

Help

This has been working great! I love it.

It has not updated for several days. I deleted it and reacquired it.

Any suggestions?

You have to remember (since it is a fully manual process by unpaid volunteers) a day in some parts of the world can take more than 24 hours, so the Photo Of the Day doesn't necessarily get updated every day :cool2:

But I would like to take this opportunity to thanks Ken and Kurt for being my trusted right hand men. (They actually do more than me, but I bask in the proverbial limelight.) Almost forgot, thanks Ed for making the changes when requested!

Who deals with all the lowlife spam signups, and the occasional irate real person who gets mistaken for spam because they use a hotmail email address with a weird user name?
Dude, you da man! 😎 😀

Steve, I'm sorry for the confusion and the unintended slight for the wonderful AAW Website volunteers.

I'm not commenting on changing the POD on the Website. My version of Ken's Google Gadget is just not updating. I deleted it. And then reinstalled it. At this point it is still showing SW Hollow Form by DMeister. I have seen several changes in the POD on the AAW site.

My question was, A) if others are having the same problem B) if someone else, including Ken had a potential solution. Since I use my iGoogle page both at home on my MAC and at work on a PC with the same results, I am thinking it is something unique to my page or my settings. Other iGoogle items are updating daily.

I appreciate the work put into the website and I get here almost everyday.

Thanks for all the fun and help with my turning. The POD I like to look at regularly and it is easy to show off at work on my iGoogle page.

Extra Space?

Hi Ken,

This is one of the neatest gadgets that I've seen! I love it!!

I was curious about the extra space after the comment. Can it be made smaller?

I know it's picky, I'm just trying to see as much as possible on my igoogle screen!!

Thanks for making this gadget and thanks for keeping the POD updated!! I really appreciate it!!

Dennis

John,
Your GoogleGadget should update as soon as I change it, which may not always happen in a timely manner. It doesn't automatically change when the AAW POD changes.
Dennis, I shortened it just for you :cool2: Another thing I have to do manually, to allow for different image heights.
Google makes it easy to make such changes, with an online Gadget Editor which I have in one of my iGoogle tabs. Nothing but editing a bit of text, and seeing that there are now 100+ people signed up for this makes the little bit of time worthwhile! 😀

For Me?

Hi Ken,

Thanks for fixing the bottom padding and to think that you did it just for me!!! 😀

It's a wonderful gadget. Every time I open my browser, I get to see a beautiful wood turning!! Now that's special!!
