At the conclusion of the last contest, I asked for some suggestions for the new one. Thanks go to Ed McDonnell for his idea of a pen contest! So, the new contest is for a pen - no other stipualtion except that it has to be a turned pen made between now and the end of the contest.

All entries must be submitted by March 30th, midnight CST, and must be titled AAW March 2012 Contest. Two photos of each entry will be allowed, and two entries per person as well.

Good luck to those participating, and the winner (and maybe more) will be published in the next Journal!

I've been saving space for the first three winners to have photos of their pieces shown in the journal and that will be the case for the pens, too. Have fun and good luck everyone!

AAW March 2012 Contest - RESULTS!!!

Here are the results from our judge, Kurt Hertzog:

Opening statements - All of the pens are nicely executed. It is difficult to assess the fit and finish of them from photographs but they all appear to have been well done by their makers. The considerations for the judging included appearance, esthetics, fit and finish, uniqueness, and difficulty level. The makers can all be proud of their works.

This pen is pleasing to the eye with a quiet elegance to it. The process for creating the blank is impressive and has been nicely executed. A nice creation that has a subtle yet stately look.

John Terefenko
Second place - http://www.aawforum.org/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=10671

A dignified look with attention to detail. The pattern orientation and matching top to bottom along with the contrasting pattern make this a bold and powerful looking pen.

A powerful looking pen with well defined metal to wood contrasts. Nicely designed and well constructed. The aluminum sleeve on the cap adds to the contrast well.

Interesting combinations of material with the contrasts both directions. The Ebony, Walnut, and aluminum accents make an interesting look.

The copper kit adds a striking contrast to the material with the pen being nicely made.

Congratulations to all for creating such a nice field of entries.
Best,

Wow! Thanks Kurt.

Congradualtions Ed. That was a tough act to follow. That is some very very well done work. Have you ever thought of putting out a line of your own pens??? You should consider it. There is no one or maybe very few who can achieve that or any other of your looks unless they have that machine and knowledge to use it in this fashion. Well done.

Thanks Kurt for the opportunity to compete.

Hopefully maybe I inspired others to try some of the things I had shown.
