The new contest is here! Loosely based on the article in the April 2010 American Woodturner, the contest is for a balanced bowl. It will also include off-center bowls as well. The piece should be turned from wood; maximum size is 10"; coloring and other surface treatments are allowed, but the main aspect of the piece is the off center design.

Deadline for entries is June 5, 12 Midnight GMT. All entries must be posted on the gallery with the following title: AAW June 2010 Contest.

We will publish a photo of the winning piece in the AAW Journal; because the Journal wants to use top quality photos, you should try to take an original in the 2-3Mb range, and make a smaller copy for uploading to the gallery.

Judging will be done by Mark Knize, the author of the Journal article.

Good Luck to all who accept this challenge!

Just a reminder that the current contest ends a week from Saturday! It's time to get those entries submitted.🙂

Well, the contest has ended with some very nice entries. They are currently being reviewed by our volunteer judge, Mark Knize. The results will be posted very soon.

Good luck to everyone who entered. Details about a new contest will be posted!

Kurt,

Having never participated in a contest before, I wanted to know (for next time) if more than one picture of the entry may be submitted.

Thanks.

AAW June 2010 Contest - The Results!

Mark Knize has judged the entries, and has responded as follows:

I like the size and idea of the Jonathan Garcia piece. Sending two views was essential to appreciate this one. The contrasting color is good, and might also be good with a turquoise color.

George Guadiane chose a beautiful wood and form. I like the way the dark ambrosia stains are balanced with the thickest wall.

The Joe Greiner piece is a novel natural edge bowl, shows a lively "balance". A second photo, more of a top view, would show the eccentric part of the form. High points for a good idea. I also like the contrasting top rim. The shot could have been cropped a bit to eliminate some of the background. It's a beautiful piece, let's see it as large as possible.

The Greg Scholz walnut bowl has an interesting undercut interior, approaching a hollow vessel. I'm not a fan of the rolled-over top edge into the bowl because there is enough action going on there with the dark interior.

Winners:
All of the pieces appear to be well made, and the photography is all good. Still, it would be easier to judge from the actual pieces, and the awards outcome may have been different. The form and the choice of wood makes George's piece the winner; I like the lively form and good idea of Joe's for second place; and Jonathan's is a solid third.

George Guadiane, First

Joe Greiner, Second

Jonathan Garcia, Third

Congratulations to George, and all of the participants! Keep looking here for news of the new contest! Thanks also to Mark Knized for judging!

Contest

Why couldn't this contest information be put in the magazine instead of having to go through all the time and trouble to get on the computer, sign in, and then search for the contest rules? I thought this was going to be some elaborate turning and you needed plenty space to give the instructions and that it would have taken up too much space in the magazine. You didn't need much more space in the magazine than it took to tell people to go to the website for the contest rules, so why not just put it in the magazine and save people time???? I would have liked to get in this contest but by the time I was able to get on the computer and find out where the rules were it was too late.

Mike,
While the contests that we have here have the results published in the AAW Journal, the contests are actually part of the AAW Forums, and have been for some time now. In addition, most of the time, the contest runs for 45-60 days, which should give you some room to read the rules. I hope you visit us more often!:cool2:
