Congratulations to the winners in the pen turning contest!

The new contest is for a lidded box. It must be turned from a single piece of wood, except for the knob or finial, and can be carved, burned, stained or otherwise decorated. However, the main body and lid must show the grain of the wood. The emphasis will be on form and the combination of any and all extras that work to complement each other in total.

Deadline is Monday, July 16th at Midnite CST. All entries should be posted on the Galleries with the title AAW July 2012 Contest.

Any questions about the contest should be posted on this thread. The winner will have his/her piece printed in the next Journal. Our judge will be announced shortly. Good luck and good turning!

Can the single piece of wood be a single board, cut into a segmented piece?

I gave your question a lot of thought. On the one hand, since the box can be decorated, a segmented piece would work.

On the other hand, the original requirement was that the box and lid must show the grain of the wood. In a segmented piece, that grain almost always becomes much smaller, and the emphasis of the piece becomes the segments. For that reason I would have to say no for this contest.

Perhaps one of the upcoming contests will be for a segmented piece.

Loosely paraphrased, the dictionary describes a box as an object used to either permanently or temporarily store smaller objects. In my definition it can be lidded or not. You may wish to look at all of the entries so far, which show a broad range of designs.

If you would like clarification on something specific you wish to do, please send me a PM.

The entries for this contest should be a new piece, not previously posted. Thanks for asking!

Our judge for this contest is Kelly Dunn, a well known woodturner who posts regularly here and on WOW! Thanks to Kelly for volunteering 😉 to judge our contest.

As I'm sure all of you know, the contest has ended with great response! 15 entries of all varieties. Here are the results:

Kelly Dunn had this to say: "I gave 1st to Bob Delio, second to Mike Marek and third to Robert Lane. I gave a personal honorable mention to Mike Brazeau and Frank Lench on his pear box".

Kelly went to the trouble of posting his comments on each entrant directly on the photo of the piece. The link for all of these is: http://www.aawforum.org/photopost/search.php?searchid=70762
Congratulations to all who entered, and look for the photo of the winning piece in the next Journal. Stay tuned for the next contest!
