A couple of months ago my wife had surgery. Knowing I was going to have to spend several days and nights on a couch in her hospital room (hospital too far to commute and I would not leave her side) and then have to care for her at home I was looking for a way to control my turning addiction. I saw an ad in the journal for 2 CD's containing 16 years of back issues. I quickly ordered and must thank the staff for rushing the CD's out to me on short notice.

These CD's have been great!! I have gotten a real history lesson on AAW as the first few issues in the #1 CD dealt with the orginization starting to grow. As I progressed through the #1 CD it has amazed me at how many articles I have printed out to keep handy in the shop in my reference notebook. Everything from skew use by Alan Lacer, an article on going to South America to harvest Rosewood, to information I needed when building my Kiln.

Even with all the hours I have spent reading, I am just now starting #2 CD! Both of the CD's contain an index but I have been having fun reading from 1-1 to 16-4!! Check them out - well worth the money!!!

Edit: Before everyone starts asking, my wife is doing great and on the way to full recovery!

Everyone should know that a very nice person by the name of Jean LeGwin put the past journals into a format that could be put on CD's. She did this for almost no money and it took her around 3000 hours. Thank you Jean.

I had not seen the CD's as being available and was just wondering if there was a way to get hold of some of the early issues. I'll have to look into it.

I am glad to hear someone speak about the CDs. I looked at purchasing them at the symposium but wanted to see examples before buying. I was hoping they would have them running on a PC. Your positive comments may push me off the fence.

Incredible resource!

I got the first CD for Christmas (a requested gift). Fascinating reading. I finished the disk and started having severe withdrawl symptoms. Ordered the second disk and had several more weeks wonderful reading.

The back issues contain so much wonderful information and ideas. You'd have to buy a pile of books and spend 10 times as much to come close to matching it. And watching the organization grow and evolve was a fascinating and education bonus.

Highly recommended!

I'll add my 2 cents by saying that I ordered the 2nd CD a couple of months ago and found a wealth of information in it. Nearly all the info is pertinent to woodturning today. While most of the photos are black and white, there is still some great history to be found in both CDs.

Why did it take Jean LeGwin so many hours to create those CDs? I had discussions with Mary Lacer about the CDs and even Mary didn't know. After using the 2nd CD I discovered why. Jean hyperlinked the entire index. When you open the Index file (a PDF) and browse for a topic, you can then click on the corresponding issue and page number and it will take you right to that article. WOW.

The hyperlinks essentially act as a point and click cross reference to the entire set of back issues on both CDs. If you have not discovered that feature on your CDs you are missing out on a valuable tool. Many thanks to Jean for the countless hours of manually doing this work.

I did not realize this, thanks for pointing it out Jeff.
You can even right-click and open in a new window, just like a browser.
I've spent many enjoyable hours browsing through the issues of both CD's and would like also to extend my thanks to Jean for doing such high quality reproductions of every issue. I wish she could have been compensated more fully!

Thanks Jeff

Leave it to our moderator to figure out how the index works!!! 😀 Thanks for the tip Jeff, this makes it even more usable as a resource. Having worked with Adobe, I find it unbelievable that Jean did this without killing someone out of frustration!!!!

Edit - I just called the AAW office and ordered mine!
