AAW January 2010 Contest - Results!!!

Beginning with this contest, we will have six per year to roughly coincide with the Journal issues. Generally, these contests are based on a Journal article whenever possible, but this contest is sort of a 'back to basics' theme.

The contest will be for a wood turned bowl, of a salad or fruit bowl shape, with the focus on the form, finish and the appeal of the chosen wood. Rim treatments are allowed, as well as external surface modifications, but the interior of the bowl must be the wood only.

The contest will end January 5th, 2010, at 12:00 Midnight, GMT. Enter the contest by posting a photo to the gallery with the title 'AAW January 2010 Contest'. One entry per person, but two photos may be posted.

Note: Since we publish the winner in the Journal (with photo), it is important that you take the largest, best quality photo you can. While the limit for the AAW Forums is now 2MB, be aware that the Journal prefers photos to be 1MB to 3MB. You can reduce the size for submittal to the Forum, and still have one large enough for the Journal.

The contest will be judged by a well known turner, to be announced before the end of the contest. Good luck and good turning.

Please feel free to post any questions.

Greg, since I live in Rogers, AR, let me start by saying Hi, Neighbor. You might want to check out our club, Stateline Woodturners: www.statelinewoodturners.com.

Given the temporary nature of these contest, and the fact that they are often tied to an article in the current Journal, a recent turning would be preferred. However, since I didn't clearly state that it had to be recent, you are free to submit whatever you wish.

Hope to hear from you!

Kurt,
I'm having trouble downloading my entry. When you said that the download size was now 2MB, was that for jpegs. I have been unable to download a 1MB jpeg file. Any suggestions. Greg

Kurt,

I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to enter the contest, but it keeps telling me that my file size is too big, and I know that it is not. First my file size was 1.55 MB, then I reduced it to 888.6 kb, and it still said it was too big. The files are JPEGs, and the file sizes I listed were the uncompressed sizes. But I think I have found the problem, although I cannot fix it. If I look at my account, it states...
"Disk space allowed on my account: 10,000 kb"
"Disk space used on my account: 436,902 kb"
"Disk space remaining on my account: 9,911 kb"
How can I have anything remaining if it says that I have used several times the amount that I am allowed? I think all of these numbers are wrong, because to date, I only have 2 images posted, and they are very small.

Thanks,

Mark Nadeau

Just for a test, I uploaded a 91kb jpeg file and it went in OK. I have asked Steve to take a look. We'll see what he can find. Thanks for your patience.

mb vs kb

Kurt,
I think the problem is that I thought the new limit for photos as stated in your in your first entry was 2mb. I see that it is still 100kb. If I understand it. Computing is not my first love. Greg

Kurt is incorrect in his original message. It is a 100k if you are not setup as an AAW member and I don't see that you (both of you) are. If you are AAW members, PM me with your username and membership # and I will change your status.
