AAW forum woodturning contest (entries due 4/5/05)

(Rules in this posting updated on 4/5/05)

What do y'all think about this idea? Is anyone interested in participating?

Feedback and discussion of this proposal is encouraged. When we get enough interest, we'll launch the start of the contest, and set a deadline.

The AAW forum would like to sponsor an online turning contest on a periodic basis. Ideas for the contest would come from the latest AW Journal. The contest would run quarterly if there is interest and participation.

Rules for this contest (this quarter):
  • Deadline is Wednesday May 4
  • Each participant would create a platter...in line with the feature story from the Spring 2005 AW Journal issue
  • Any and all turned wooden platter submissions would be candidates
  • One platter per person
  • Minimum diameter 6"

How to submit:
  • Post your entry in the photo gallery and label it "AAW platter contest entry" so people will recognize it.
  • Also email me, and I'll track the entries.

Winner and Prize:
The winner will be determined by popular vote from forum participants. The voting could be done thru SurveyMonkey or thru the forum in the poll feature. (I'll setup the poll, currently I'm the one who sets up the AAW surveys).

The prize would be to highlight the item and the woodturner on the AAW homepage. The winner will also be announced in the AW Journal. Maybe the winning woodturner could write a short description about the piece, their inspiration for it, and a short woodturner biography. Then I'll workup the content into a webpage. The webpage would be announced and linked on the homepage. The homepage would have a short summary plus a thumbnail picture.

We currently have 16 potential participants, and that includes me. Unless there are any questions or suggested changes to the rules, let's start turning some platters. I will modify the original posting at the top of the thread with the following.

Additional rules:
- Deadline is Wednesday May 4, which gives us four weekends to design and turn the platters.

How to submit:
- Post your entry in the photo gallery and label it "AAW platter contest entry" so people will recognize it.
- Also email me, and I'll track the entries.

The winner will be announced on the homepage as discussed previously. Also the winner will be announced in the AW Journal.

Let's get turning!

2 weeks to go!

We are 2 weeks away from the online contest deadline. And that includes 2 weekends! 20 folks indicated they were interested in participating....it will be interesting to see the submissions.

Jeff, I would love to participate in something like this, but the season is all wrong for me. Right about now I'm concentrating on a thing or two more for the Symposium instant gallery, trophy striper fishing, and bicycle racing - not much lathe work will get done until the fall.

I'd like to encourage this contest, but also would ask you to consider one in the fall and winter for those of us unable to commit now.

Good question Mike. The intent of the contest is to mirror the AAW objectives - to promote turning. And the contest was originally supposed to spawn new work based on the subject. That's the long answer.

For this contest, the platter should be created in 2005. In the next contest I'll include this in the contest launch.

But Mike, I bet you have an unfinished platter in your studio that is just begging to get completed 🙂

contest

I would love to do this, but I'm affaid I'm not that good and a little late to the contest. So in about 10 years when I get better I will have a go at it. Peace

The contest entries that have been received to date...are listed below by name. I'll post a pic of my personal entry by the entry deadline (Wednesday). The following set represents some very good work.

For remaining entries, please post them in the photo gallery and I'll catch them as they come in. If I missed your existing entry please email me at jjilg@sbcglobal.net and I'll make sure your entry is recorded.

Arbud (aka Bud Gillaspie) - Pacific Maple burl

Bernj - Tiger Maple Platter

Mike Schwing - Maple burl platter

Molly Winton - Pacific Northwest Yew platter

PFDuffy - Walnut platter

Jeff
I'm sorry for not having an entry. I just finished a project for a church org. which has taken me 6 weeks to finish. It is now done. Can't wait for the next turning project. I'm looking forward to it and also hope I'm worthy of the project. To this point I have turned nothing of any size. Keep up the programs and I will do what I enjoy.
