The last contest was one of the best we've had in a while! I hope it continues. This contest will again be a 'back to basics' type:

Tool Handle

The contest will be for the best wood tool handle, based on beauty of the wood, functionality, design, form and practicality. It can be one of the following: turning tool handle, pizza cutter, ice cream scoop, locking handle for your tool rest or tailstock, awl or burnisher handle, or centering drill bit handle. You are open to carving, pyrography, laminating, rose engine, segmenting, etc. as long as the piece is primarily a wood turning.

Contest will end March 5th, 2010 at 12 Midnight GMT. Enter the contest by uploading a photo to the gallery titled 'AAW February 2010 Contest' with a 250kb file size limit (AAW Members have a 2MB file limit - Steve)

We will publish a photo of the winning piece in the AAW Journal; because the Journal wants to use top quality photos, you should try to take an original in the 2-3Mb range, and make a smaller copy for uploading to the gallery.

Judging will be done by a well-known turner, to be announced shortly.

Good Luck to all who wish to participate, and think they can 'handle' this contest!😉

The contest has ended, and the entries have been submitted to our judge, Alan Lacer. Congratulations to those who entered, and I will report the results shortly! Keep watching for the new contest!

And the results are in!!! From Alan Lacer:

Hi Kurt:
Here is the order of winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd):
1. Don Leydens
Nice shape, especially the "stepped design" that allows a nice firm grip when choking-up on a tool. This also takes it beyond a production tool handle.

2. James Gaydos
Even though inspired by Sorby handles, I think it is more sleek and an improvement over their shape. You make the ultimate comments about handles: feel in the hand is what counts and that they quickly become old friends (when done well!).

3. Ann Herbst
Clean looking handle, especially the geometric look from the glue up. I especially value the notion of no sanding for a handle--takes good tool technique to create but almost more importantly: better gripping surface over a highly sanded one.

Congratulations to the entrants, and thank you for participating! The new contest will be posted shortly.

Thanks a million Jeff. I'm very excited about this. It's quite an honor for a new turner to be in the AAW Journal.
