This quarters contest is ring turning as outlined in the article in the Fall 2008 Vol 23 #3 Issue of the AAW Journal.

The pieces must have been turned by the entrant between August 1st 2008 and the close of the contest Oct 2 Midnight GMT.

The ring can be no greater than 16" in diameter and you must submit a photo that shows the cut (roughly 1/4) ring and a face shot of the turning. It can be either one combined photo or two individuals.

The photos must be uploaded with a title of AAW Fall 2008 Contest.

The ring itself can be detailed or manipulated in any way, but the face must be the plain, finished wood with no coloring, burning or otherwise altered. All entries must be made entirely of wood, but could be segmented if you prefer.

Judging will be from a yet to be contacted wood turner.

If you have questions, shoot them on by.

Brain cramping...

I love Tim Yoder. My cable dropped his show just after I discovered it.

I spied him at the banquet 2 tables over. I actually played "dazzled fan" and asked for his autograph. He signed my New Masters book even though he said he wasn't in it. I told him "nonsense, you're right on the first page with all the other folks I chased down here!"

This German Ring Turning really fascinates me. Not sure I can pull it off, but it will be a fun challenge!

If anyone finds any web resources on this topic, please share them. So far I'm coming up empty.

I don't know about online resources, but Mike Darlow's book Woodturning Techniques has a pretty good section on turning rings in Chapter 5.
