Does anyone know what the Vice President is supposed to do in an AAW Chapter? I'm new to my chapter and volunteered to take the spot.

Thanks in advance

As a founding member and long-time officer of the Southern Oregon Woodturners chapter of the AAW, I think I can safely say that it is strictly up to the Chapter membership. Normally, the VP substitutes for the President when the latter is unavailable or incapacitated. In my experience, any other duties are negotiated within the club.

Additionally (I held the job locally for a time) my job was to arrange for demonstrators.

Been Vice President for a couple of clubs. The main job is to fill in for the pres if he/she is out. However it should be a team effort the officers of the club should all share ideas and work together to find demonstrators. In many clubs the Vice President does do the job of finding demonstrators.

I am in the second term as Treasurer and Webmaster for our club and what you have heard is the accepted norm. The old bylaws (which came from AAW) are outdated and only spell out well the Presidents duties and powers which is basically whatever he (the pres) wants to do. I plan for us to update these and add specific duties lists . We have done that with the deacons at my church and it has worked well for new officers to know duties and carry on in order. This also gives continuity to the programs of an organization and the wheel does not have to be reinvented each year.

Always a good idea to have the duties in writing.

Filling in during the presidents absence is somewhat universal.
It is quite common for the VP to be the program chairman( scheduling demonstrators, workshops,,etc.)

Many clubs have a board and officers meetings to plan, conduct routine business, and recommend actions to the membership.
The Vice President would be a key member of this group if your chapter operates this way.

Once you get involved, I think that you will find that there is no shortage of things to do ... not just the routine business, but also look for and take charge of new opportunities for the club. That is the sort of stuff that makes a club prosper.

Hi Scott - Here are the VP's responsibilities from our clubs bylaws;

C. Vice President: In the absence of the President, the Vice President shall perform the duties of the
President. When so acting, the Vice President shall have all the responsibilities, duties and powers of the
President and shall be subject to all the restrictions upon the President.
The Vice President shall be the Chairperson of the Program Committee. As such, the Vice President shall
be responsible for scheduling programs for general meetings and such other events as decided by the
Board of Directors. Duties shall include arranging for visits by outside demonstrators, demonstrations by
BWT members, visits of BWT to other chapters, or other places of interest and assuring that insurance
requirements are met by such activities. The Vice President may appoint members to the Program
Committee and delegate to them such duties as are deemed appropriate.
The Vice President shall have responsibility for the tools, machines and real property owned by BWT
including, but not limited to, receipt, disposition, storage, maintenance and those other matters necessary
to keep the property in proper condition. The Vice President shall also keep the Treasurer informed as to
what has been disposed of and currently owned and its condition for valuation purposes.

The VP in our club has a lot to do, I held that position and the Presidents position and I'd say that the VP's spot in our club is more work.

Happy Turning
Tom

In our club the VP is in training so to speak to be prez. The VP does takeover if the Prez is gone. The two of them do collaborate on club challenges and what kind of demo to have at a meeting. I think the VP is also in charge of the lending library. I have been outside demo point and keeper of the books since day one in our club. They seem to want me to keep it up year after year. That said, all the club officers are in on most decides. Some the prez and VP just call and tell me write a check to some outfit. I dont think one time have I ever questioned what the two of them have decided to do in an executive decision. But the two of them become a team.

Officers' Duties

We have an actual "Officers Responsibilities" document somebody prepared long ago that I could pass on if you're interested. We have three vice presidents:
FIRST VP -- Training and Education, arranges for workshops and demonstrations
SECOND VP -- Public Relations, oversees the newsletter, website, and general publicity of events
THIRD VP -- Membership, manages the mailing list and recruits new members

Can I attach a Word document here?

At Flatland Woodturners some of the things that our current VP (Rick Bucker) does is handle club orders. Finds discounts. Arranges the Professional demonstrations.
Rick does a great job.
