I'm driving down to the symposium from the Seattle area. I'll be pulling a small trailer on the way back, since I'll be bringing home a new lathe. There's going to be room in the trailer, thought I'd stop on the way back wherever there's good turning stock available for sale. Any suggestions on places I shouldn't miss?

Definitely stop at the Gilmer Wood Company if you are in Portland - fantastic supplier with excellent diversity of species. Great customer service. It is found in northwest Portland on Mt. St. Helens Road. I stop by there whenever I'm in the City of Roses.

See: http://www.gilmerwood.com/

Have a great drive!

More wood

Gilmer wood in Portland is great but depending on your route try Abe Hanks (look in woodfinder) on the south coast of Oregon.

If you go up 5 to 97 in Weed, CA tun north and in Klamath Falls is COOK Woods, if you dont find what you want you can still head to Portland & Gilmer.

Jeff,

Check out Urban Lumber, 2440 Main Street in Springfield OR. Seth is a sawyer who 'rescues' wood ands sells to artists and cabinet makers etc. Prices are very fair. The place isn't much to look at but go in explore and enjoy.

I am a traveling salesman from Illinois and whenever I make the Oregon run I take an extra suitcase. It comes back full. I have enough miles that United treats me to that bag. One of the few perks I use once in a while.

Frank,

Wait a minute, you have been coming to Eugene/Springfield for how long and you never stopped by to harass me???? Seth is a nice guy, and actually bought my old house.

Jeff, what lathe are you bringing back home?????

Thanks Everyone

Charles - I'll make it a point to stop in Yreka. I remember a summer I spent there as a kid of 8. Strangely, the one thing I recall learning that summer was that the Yreka Bakery is a perfect palindrome.

Robo - you may be pleased to learn that I'm bring home a Robust AB 25. Been waiting since ordering it a while back (in February). Seemed like a good deal at the time - saved the shipping, but I'm getting really anxious to get it home...

Jeff,
Hey, is that the new sit down lathe? Brent told me to check it out. My hips are shot, and due to be replaced. I do like the way it cantilevers out. Hey, I should be back in Eugene on Monday some time, getting out of San Jose on Sunday night. I just got some nice Myrtle slabs (2 1/4 inch by 8 to 10 inch wide, and a myrtle log, and a Madrone log.

its the American Beauty. I didn't even hear about the new sit down version until March or so - after ordering the American Beauty. Sounds like a great load of wood.

I'm not planning to leave San Jose until Monday...taking my time getting back pulling a small u-haul...

Well, Duhhhh!!! AB = American Beauty. Had mine since about 6 months after the Portland Symposium. Pretty sweet. Eugene is about 5 hours from Seattle, depending on traffic. Stop on by if you can. I will be talking to Brent down there as well.

Myrtle town

Going up I-5, its a short jaunt on highway 199 (West) Out of Grant's Pass to a great Burl vendor. Can't miss it as it's right on the side of the road with big burly things out front. They have Myrtle, Buckeye, Madrone, and manzanita. There are actually several vendors along a short stretch there and a great Deli nearby. Figure about twenty minutes there and the same back to I-5. I also vouch for Seth at Urban Woods in Eugene/ Springfield.

The new Robust sit down lathe is a major jump forward.
A guy in our club has one and it has bed that locks in at different angles. The bed is also set forward to allow access too.
Withe the sliding headstock the bed doesn't need to be tilted for hollowing.
Brent is still tweaking things here and there but what a sweet machine!

here is a video that Ed Brannon's nieces boyfriend shot.
