Is everyone getting regional announcements? I've gotten two from clubs in Canada which is a long way off and would require a passport. Is a new practice in place causing this as I've never gotten them before from so far away.

Ok, I changed it on the forum? On my membership page it has my home address in Wisconsin. I assumed they used the membership information to specify mailings.

Thanks,

Dave

I'm not sure what announcements you are referring to, but I am guessing that you have joined or subscribed to some groups or news feed on the AAW site and are not referring to something on the AAW Forums. I would suggest that you go to your personal profile page on the AAW site to change any preferences for the type of email or RSS Feeds that you receive. The only information that I know is sent out automatically is membership renewal reminders. Everything else is strictly opt-in (if you don't opt-in, you get nothing). I did get a reminder earlier in the year about the resource directory mailing and I also received an email asking if a picture of one of my turnings could be included in Woodturning FUNdamentals. Other than that I haven't received any communication that I wasn't expecting.

Even though it is mentioned on the AAW site, I will mention it here ... forum membership is completely separate from AAW membership. There are several reasons for this complete separation. The forums are open and free to all woodturners while you must be a paid member to access parts of the AAW site. For obvious reasons the AAW keeps membership data secure since it contains valuable personal information. Because of this complete separation, any updates you make here stays here on the forum and any updates on the AAW site stays there.

I've contacted AAW and asked what to do. I can't find any place to check or uncheck mailings on my profile, but that doesn't mean they're not there.

I went through my AAW emails (there aren't very many over the course of a year) and in addition to what I previously mentioned, I receive notices about the annual symposium and occasionally I get free digital downloads of various AAW publications. I see where I am able to sign up for additional mailings, but I don't really need to get more email. I only have time to read a fraction of what I get anyway and the rest goes in the wastebasket.

I have nothing checked under groups in my profile. Something is goofed up because I'm getting announcements from events in Canada and not in Iowa. We'll see what they have to say. Like you Bill, I already get too much junk to be bothered by more.

In some instances the AAW will send an email at the request of the sender to all members in certain states/provinces.

AAW does this for the Tampa woodworking show when we invite all the AAW members to attend the demonstrations.
AAW does this for the regional symposiums.

We get one or two every year who make a 4 hour drive to Tampa.

Here is a way to get removed from a mailing list. Go to the bottom of the email and if the email was from the AAW, there will be an unsubscribe link as shown in the attached image.

A reply from national indicates if I unsubscribe to an email I've unsubscribed to all emails. No filters or choices it appears, it's either on or off.

Hi David
As a service to the chapters and regional woodturners AAW sends out emails to members of events. The email service AAW uses is Constant Contact, you may unsubscribe at any time. Unfortunately that would block all emails from AAW.

Best regards

I found information on their website yesterday that said regional symposiums and clubs can request emails be sent out to members in a particular geographical area or to all AAW members. I suppose that nobody is interested in sending announcements out to Texas. I wish that the AAW would reconsider how they send out these announcements and allow opting out of specific types of announcements.

Some seem to be getting off the real subject of what Dave asked, and a problem that I also have been having with the AAW lately. That problem is that we are getting non stop emails, of demonstrations and symposiums that are way too far from our homes. This is something that has only recently started happening. We used to get notice of demonstrations at clubs that were near to us, but for some troublesome reason, the AAW is now sending an over abundance of emails of demonstrations everywhere, in and out of the US. We should not have to opt out of all email notifications to stop this. We used to only get notifications of demonstrations that were within a reasonable distance, and the National symposium, and that was all well and good, but for some troublesome reason, they now seem to be sending out notice to every ones demonstration, or symposium. I, and I am sure, many others, would much appreciate it going back to the way it was, just a short time back. I think once it gets further than your neighboring state, it's too far away.

Musky, I suggest that you phone the AAW and speak to Linda Ferber. Speaking in person has a much greater impact than an email message. If enough other people feel as you do then they may modify their email policy. It appears that some clubs and regional symposiums may be abusing this service. However, while complaining about it on the forum may be a way to blow off steam, I doubt that any of the AAW staff has time to browse the forum.

I took a count of my emails from the AAW and on average it seems to be about two or three per month. What would you estimate as your volume of email from the AAW?

Please keep the discussion friendly. We don't have rigid rules. One person's definition of "off topic" isn't necessarily shared by everyone. Sometimes the discussion may meander a bit.

aaw emails were the best form of advertising for our symposium......got the most results

personally I like them even if they are from the left coast , Ireland, new Zealand, or Australia
I like to see who is demoing and what topics will be presented......sort of like to compare cost also
I did attend DE one day demo for a tampa club......great price and gave me a reason to get out of the cold
