Obviously this is not a a typical Gallery post but I had fun gathering together pictures of my carved textures on finished bowls. I used a variety of woods, dyes and acrylic paints. All were hand carved except one used a Dremel.
11” x 4”, finished with Walrus oil and buffed with brown tripoli
Evidence that I make things other than shiny hollow forms 😅. Made this bowl as a housewarming gift for some friends who just built a new home. Their only ask what that the bowl could hold their remote controls, so I make the base...
I showed this bowl in unfinished form at the Feb 8 Thin Wall demonstration I gave to the Seattle Chapter membership. Before I started piercing I showed it to one of our members who commented on the wonderful figure of the maple . I decided to pierce every alternate ring of the figure in order...

For fly fishermen the four seasons are Rainbow trout, Brooke, Brown or Cutthroat. Turned from cherry, textured and painted with acrylic paints. One panel for each specie is carved on the four sides of the 12" tall vessel
Cherry wood. Turned, carved, burn-textured, acrylic paints. 4 1/2" diameter, 6" long.
I've been enjoying the recent images captured by the James Webb telescope, and so I tilted this piece in a way that it may consider the horizon and the heavens.

This 9-inch diameter bowl was turned from a block of spalted Maple. The upper section was turned with a steep-sloped multi-axis method to provide three separate overhanging surfaces. The bowl's rim was carved and shaped to follow grain patterns in the wood. A textured ring was added to the...
This 12-inch tall vase was turned from a block of Walnut. A 3-point multi-axis approach was used to create the twist. Texturing and coloring were added in the carved sections between the rising 'stalks'. When I finished the piece it reminded me of a stalk of corn with strands of brown husk...
Inspired by the animate, other-than-human spirits that inhabit our sensuous world.
