After a period of turning more functional pieces I am back to creating some things that are more artsy . This footed open form is called Holuhraun which is the name of an Icelandic volcano that spectacularly erupted about 10 years ago in the central highlands. The rib that extends from slot in...
This is a footed black walnut vessel. The texture in the bands was created with a woodburner. The finish is wipe on poly. It is roughly 8" tall and 7" in diameter.
I had an idea for a vessel a couple years ago and decided that the 300 year old elm tree was a worthy candidate for my creation. The thought that this tree was standing 30 or 40’ tall when Patrick Henry gave his famous speech a block away in St. John’s church was with me during its creation.
I wanted to create a tribute to the Ukrainian people and the battle against the Russians I chose the blue and yellow for their flag colors and the V motif for their ultimate victory over the Russians. While turning the piece I encountered an unseen bark inclusion which I was able to deal with...
I spent many hours on this and it is so far my finest piece of work. It is southern magnolia and the leaves were templated from ones picked off a magnolia in my yard. The finish is oil based urethane and artist acrylic paint.
Burnt with a torch, wire bushed, ebonized, embellishing wax, rattle can glaze. Turned from an ash crotch found in a firewood pile. There were lots of cracks and repairs needed after drying making this particular piece of wood a candidate for the rough treatment above. Bottom view

This began as a test of embellishments on pine I had. I never use pine so was to be a throwaway. Paints used are acrylics and Metallic Gourd Ink . Finished in Lacquer. Yes I kept it.
Platter in Pecan . Burned eagle pattern colored with pencil. Holes drilled and filled with acrylic to represent the Red , White & Blue. 15 inch diameter. Finish is lacquer.
I was inspired by the works of Avelino Samuel when I created this piece a year ago this month. Avelino visited our Richmond Woodturners club after the Raleigh AAW Symposium and I was fortunate to be one of the club members that was able to spend the day with him learning about his design and...
I was going for the Art Deco look when I created this footed bowl. There are six ginkgo leaves wrapping around the bowl with the base of each leaf forming a foot. The wood is southern magnolia and the finishes are wipe on poly and artist acrylic paints. It is 9.5" in diameter and 4.25" tall.
This 8 1/2 inch tall twisted lamp was turned off-center on the upper section to create the twist. Textured leaves with holes were carved and embellished with bronze green and gold paints. An internal light provides a soft glow through the holes. You can see the internals and the lamp with its...
This 12 inch overall diameter platter was turned from a solid plank of walnut. The handles were cut, drilled and carved to create their shape. Texturing was added to the sections where the handles 'attach' to the platter center section to give them a hammered metallic look. Embellishments were...
