Yoshino cherry hollow form

Yoshino cherry hollow form

3.5”h x 4”d

Had to cut down our favorite yoshino cherry last year after we saw signs of rot. I turned this piece on a whim, not sure it would stay together if I went thin, but I managed to get the walls to 1/8” and it held like a champ! Sanded the entire vessel, outside and inside, to 600. Applied five light coats of Danish oil, let cure for a week, then three-stage buffed to a high gloss.
Glad it held together, glad ur safe. Do u have pic of ur process, did u Hollow before turning the outside?

I didn’t capture the process, but I approached this piece like a standard hollow form: Established the shape of the form first, hollowed, then used a jam chuck to turn it around and finish the bottom.

For hollowing, I like to use cupped carbide cutters to remove most of the material, then switch to the John Jordan hss cutters for the finishing cuts. As it started getting thin, I kept the tool sharp and took light cuts with the lathe at ~1200 rpm. I sanded the outside while it was on the lathe, then hand sanded the inside off the lathe.

Should not have problem with shavings buildup inside hf

Nice one, Jaramiah. Given the size, how did you even get your fingers in there to sand? Do you have a magical tool that we all should have?!? 😇
