Western Austrialian She Oak
Terry Scott

Western Austrialian She Oak

Western Australian She- oak
Turned from a 150mm 5 inch high and wide blank that I brought in Australia
This stuff is very expensive .After turning I found out why.
Turns like butter, hard as nails, sands easily and has strength in the grain to turn thinly.
After it was turned I spent a couple of hours hand sanding to 1200 grit but then to the disgust of the Australians textured the out side.
However after I had finished it and coated with Danish oil and let them have a hold of it everyone agreed the leather like tactile feel I achieved was an asset to the piece.
Even know when I go into my gallery I pick this piece up and have a hold.
The timber has a warmth and nice karma about it
This is one piece that had to have feet
Comments welcome
very nice, what type of tool did you use to texture the outside? why did you have to sand to 1200 then texture or after sanding you wanted a different effect??

My rule for texturing is if you don't finish to your normal standard, once the texture is applied any tool marks or sanding marks will be highlighted by any texture ,To often I seen a lovely form with a band of texture but the maker has thought because they texture it will hide the torn grain ,or bruising
A dremel was used in a figure of eight pattern being carefull not to end up with sectional lines the secret is to finish in one session or when you come back the motion may change distorting the texture
Cheers

Gorgeous piece, Terry!
I'm @ David Ellsworth's place for a 3 day workshop. Holy crap, he's a genius! I've gotten so much out of this weekend.
Your work has been a topic of discussion several times over the weekend.
Keep it up!
