Vortex of the Beast

Vortex of the Beast

This was my entry in the WoodturnersAmerica, Beauty and the Beast contest (beast category). I ended up with a respectable 2nd place! What an honor.

Made to emulate the beast we have in the mid-west, a tornado. Turned from Osage Orange to 1/16" thick and pierced. The edges were contrasted with pyro.

5" tall x 2 1/2" wide, finished with thinned shellac and Ren wax.
Scott, I really liked this piece when I first saw it. Love the piercing and the funnel. The photo is fantastic - would love to know how it was done.

Hal, this photo was taken with very low ambient light in the photo tent, a black back drop and I used a hand held pen light for the swirl effect. Basically the exposure was fairly long and as soon as I hit the shutter I swirled the light shining straight down from above. It turned out better than I thought it would! Thanks

It certainly conjures thoughts of a tornado Scott.
This is a serious Gallery piece, stunning

Very cool piece and an excellent photo!
