Vortex Coin Bank A

Vortex Coin Bank
10.5”x10.5”x12”
Maple, Katalox, Aspen, Bloodwood, Yellowheart, Walnut, Wenge, and African Mahogany with East Indian Rosewood Base.

This piece was inspired by coin donation funnels found in zoos and other public places. Coins inserted in the ramp spiral around the vortex shape with increasing speed before being deposited in the base. If you like math, the shape of the cross section of the vortex is modeled by the graph of the equations y = - |1/x|. I enlarged the graph and printed it on paper to create a template for turning. The real challenge of the project was determining the shape and placement of the coin ramp. It took almost as long as it did to build the vortex.
Interesting Vortex shape Pat! I like the way you did the stem; excellent idea on folding the bank concept into this piece!!
