Osage Orange with some spalting. About 7" dia. Hollow with thin walls. I was trying to think "outside the box", and would really welcome any and all comments
An intriguing piece that looks like it was a challenge to turn. I really want to like it a lot, but there are two things that keep catching my eye and preventing me from enjoying the overall effect of the piece.
One is what looks like a flat on the left side (in the picture) of the piece. Everything else on the piece is nice flowing curves and the linearity / flatness of that one section really jumps out and distracts me.
The other thing is the spalting in the unturned portion. If there was bark here or no spalting I think it would look great. I just don't like the look of the spalting in this instance.
Ed, Many thanks. The piece doesn't quite make it with me, either, and I wanted other's thoughts. You're right, it does have a flat on the left side and perhaps that's what 's distracting me. I like the spalting and carved around it to add some shape. I want to learn from the piece and appreciate all comments.
