Twisted Bowl

Twisted Bowl

This ‘twisted bowl’ was turned from a block of mystery wood (possibly plum or red cherry) using a 3-point off-axis method to provide the twist. Bowl diameter is 5 ½ inches and height is 3 ½ inches. My previous turning efforts on twisted bowls have not provided very dramatic results on the edge twist. As a result, I made some mock-ups of shapes where the top part of the object is twisted and the bottom is round. Based on the mock-up results I was able to capture more of the twist by adding sacrificial top and bottom blocks to the turned section of wood for turning on the lathe. The result was a much more dramatic twist. The top of the bowl was finished with a circular shape to provide a contrasting geometry at the intersection of the surfaces.
