The Group of Seven

Last year we were offered some Pacific Yew that was removed while building a home. These hollowed vessels range from 14" tall to 30" tall, turned and hollowed while green and then dried for a month or so and returned to true them up. Most of these were painted black inside and several have voids where the bark seams ran deep. Finished with multiple coats of tung. oil. Yew turns and finishes up beautifully with very little movement or cracking while drying even with the pith in.
Dave, nice pieces. I have a 24" cypress hollow form with a lot of open inclusions I'm getting ready to apply finish to. Inclusions similar to the one second from left on the back row in your pic. Curious about how you painted the inside black without making a mess.

Hi Randy, thank you. I first applied 1 coat of tung oil to the entire outside. The next day I applied a coat of shellac to the entire inside using a small foam brush, once the shellac dried I then used a new foam brush to paint the entire inside. I start at the bottom and check my work with a flashlight and then work my way up evenly so I don't make a mess. I did have some shellac get onto the rim and wiped it off but it dries so fast I had to lightly sand it before applying the final coats of tung oil. This process worked well, good luck Dave
