Larger in diameter, but shallower than its popcorn cousin. Same rim treatment though. Pretty enough to show, but it's for go.

i like it, what causes the dark wood across the rings?

Not sure what causes it, but what it is is the same extractives the tree accumulates in the heartwood as it ages. Soft maple has larger and dark heartwood compared to hard, and when the tree fails to get it organized centered up, this happens.
