Silver Maple Burl Platter w/ Natural Feet

Silver Maple Burl Platter w/ Natural Feet

This was a fun and challenging piece for me. After seeing some pieces by Pat Miller and others where the backside of a burl cap is left intact, I thought it would be a fun thing to try. The back of this platter features a few burl points (eyes?) that are spaced perfectly as three feet would be. I used hotmelt glue, wood chunks, and a faceplate and plywood disc to mount and turn piece. Once finished, I whittled the back edge with a knife to give some contours and make the burl more visible. I also questionably added a band of green dots, which I somewhat regret. All in all, I learned a lot!
Here are views of the back of the platter, as well as a couple of side views:

The green dots vs “natural” feel conflict to my eye. If they were pyro or tooled, maybe not so much. Nice job saving the cool natural side.
That’s my conflict too, on both accounts. I thought the green would complement the colors of the silver maple. Which is true to some extent, BUT there is also so much going on with the figure and shape, that it just ended up being a distraction. And they look sloppy, which works sometimes, but not when it’s a straight-ish line.
