I started this sculpture quite some time ago with the intent of turning a heart made from a hollow vessel. I knew how I was going to do it, just not WHAT I was going to do with it. So, the heart has been turned and in two halves for a couple of years as I contemplated its final destiny.
Then a pandemic, a recession, and unprecedented racial tensions…just to name a few. Our world changed almost overnight. It all just broke my heart. BINGO! Now I knew what I HAD to do with the heart, and it was completed yesterday.
The world has been mandated to separate ourselves and stay six feet apart…but we all are having to do this together…hence the title. I guess one could say that this is an interactive sculpture as the base is in two halves and the heart can be displayed in any number of configurations.
In addition to the obvious separation implications, this simple sculpture stirs so many other emotions that are a sign of the world we are living in. The base is intentionally angular with hard edges. Although subtle, one side of the base is dyed solid black and on the other, the top face was left natural. To me, the “hardness” of the base is in stark contrast to the smooth flowing lines of the vessel itself and evokes creative tension.
Altogether, this sculpture is 7.5” x 7.5” x 3.5”. The heart is Red Gum Burl that has a slight dye to bring out the grain. The base is Padauk and the top faces have been textured and one of them dyed. Bases weighted with lead shot.
