Resurfaced

Carved Alder, acrylic, milk paint, approx 7”d x 4.5”h
I originally created this piece nearly two years ago, a couple months after taking a workshop with Graeme Priddle and Melissa Engler. I had forgotten just enough to “botch” the paint job. Graeme and Melissa were back in town last weekend and I took it to them. After consulting with them and trying a couple “fixes”, I decided to sandblast off the old paint and redo it. I was a little nervous about creating unwanted texture from the blasting, but was pleasantly surprised that other than accentuating a few random rays, the alder blasted beautifully and only took on a slight texture. I re-painted (re-surfaced) it with Melissa over my shoulder and am sooo much happier with the result. If you ever have the opportunity to spend time with the wonderful people and fantastic artists, do it!

Was this originally turned on a lathe before adding the texture? Cam you give more details on the history?
Yes, it was turned and hollowed before carving. For the carving, the vertical spines were carved first, then the horizontal. A lot of material needed to be removed to form what became the spines. When I originally painted it, I was heavy handed and it came out muddy.
