Spalted ambrosia maple, peridots & gold settings. Approx. 9" x 3"

This project was made to celebrate my return to the woodshop after a 14 month recovery from my 3rd spinal surgery AND to celebrate my son's 30th birthday. Originally it was meant to be a cheap, bargain bin, dried out warm up piece. My son saw an in-progress shot and said he loved it. It was turning out so well that I went for the gift idea.

The wall thickness allowed me to drill all the way through so that the gold settings would show up as dots on the inside rim. The holes were ever-so-carefully drilled with a hand powered drill; sometimes only turning the bit by hand & not crank.

My son identifies with his Irish roots so in addition to the 30 peridots on the rim I burned a Celtic wreath around the base.

My son recently told me "You never stop taking my breath away!" Best.Kid.EVER!

Oh, and he gave me about 500 pounds of walnut, cherry & pin oak for my birthday! He got it from road finds & customers whom he had given my card to.
What a great first piece, welcome back. I'm on my second time away from the lathe for months due to surgery so I know how you feel. Great that you are back & raring to go.
Best wishes,
Bill
