Redwood Vessel

6 1/2" x 5 1/2" Redwood, buffed w. tripoli, white diamond, and carnuba. While turning a bark inclusion fell out, then I noticed several cracks! Trying to save the piece I left the wall slightly thicker where the inclusion had been. I hid the cracks with pyrography (wood burning) desogn. I would appreciate comments, good and bad.
I like. Is redwood as big a PITA to cut as fir, spruce and western red cedar? Every time you start to get some spread on the annual rings, it seems you crush late wood into softer early. Then there's the real thrill, bevel bruises from trying to turn the corner.

I can only compare it to Eastern Red Cedar. I would say it has some of the same problems you describe, but is easier to work. You must have dust collection right next to the wood or your whole shop will be covered. Dale

Well, I like the form and the wood. I used to have issues with "flaws" and mistakes, and I still throw a piece in the burn pile, from time to time, but I;m glad to see that you finished this one. It looks like you did the right thing by "saving."
The finish is beautiful and I really like the rim. The pyrography is clean and neat and the knot makes it art, as I was told "If it holds water its a bowl if not, its ART."

your stuff is great..i am one who thrives on roots ,natural edges.will always include bark inclusion if possible..looks a lot like red cedar which also can really have beautiful grain and colors

Nice looking piece, Dale. I like the form and the finish. I have found that as long as you don't oversand redwood it does a fine job.
