Quilted Vietnamese Rosewood Capsule Box

Time for a birthday box, today's the day btw!! I had this stunning piece of quilted Vietnamese Rosewood (Dalbergia Cochinchinensis) on the shelf for a little over a week and thought, I need to turn this! Turned, hollowed to a pretty thin wall, and finished with heat buffed wax and two coats of gloss lacquer. The photo just so not do justice as it is a bit dark. Size is 1 7/8" tall x 1 3/4" in diameter. The dark cherry wine color with the quilted and figured patterns has got to be one of the best pieces I have come across!!
AGED, Tks for sharing

Very Nice. What is heat buffed wax?
Thanks! It is where I coat the box with the abrasive wax, and then turn up the lathe speed to 2,500-3000 rpm and buff it in until it gets really hot. This burnishes the surface and melts the wax away so then I can apply the lacquer. It leaves the hardened wax in the pores though so I get a super glassy smooth surface that the lacquer can adhere to. By doing this is eleminates the worry of the lacquer peeling but ensures I still get a smooth prep surface.

Very nice, Gabriel. Never heard of that type of rosewood ... beautiful figure! However, given the very small size and the "capsule" form with parallel sides this would be an ergonomic nightmare for an old guy like me to open. Someday you will be old and understand ;) ... just kidding. Happy Birthday !!!

Thanks everyone for the kind words! Yes Tom it is a bit small, I usually keep the lid fit somewhat loose, but it probably would be harder to remove given the smooth glossy sides!
