Playing With Black 2

Box Elder (punky at that!), Gesso. About 7". Comments welcome.
Carole, I like it for its uniqueness, but I think I would like it even more if the top were more delicate. Just my two cents.

A great piece. I like the top just the way it is - it suggests a certain juxtaposition of forms and weights.

Carole, as I said in the wow site, this is a terrific piece and great save. You need to pursue the carving some more. The top is ok for punky wood and may have not survived thinning. Great job!

Thanks. guys. Bill, the top is the same thickness as the walls...just doesn't look like it in the picture due to the outward slope I put on the lip. The whole ting is light as a feather. The problem with this piece is that when you go creating negative space anywhere in the shoulder curve it makes the top and neck appear out of proportion (larger). That's something I learned from doing this one that I will remember next time!

Beautiful work, Carole. I'd like to see this without the top. Just a thought. Well done.
Don L.

Don, "No Top" is on the lathe as we speak. This one was once destined for no top, but decided to leave it on to see what it looked like.

This new direction is wonderful!

Great job, Carole. I like the top on it. It sort of anchors the piece. My only caveat would be to make the top a bit smaller, shorter, in relation to the rest of the turning. It seems just a tad top heavy. Very minor quibble, though, as I also like the transition from the carved section to the top.

Well, Carole, I rarely comment on photos, zand even more rarely do I view the photo album (it's a time thing) but when I saw this on the Home Page, I had to click on it. What a wonderful surprise to see that it was done by you! Well done! I look forward to seeing more in this series.
