What kind of pine?

@Tom Albrecht Tom, this is ponderosa pine which is probably the most common tree here (and probably in the pacific northwest). When the pine beetle infests these tree their excrement causes the wood to turn blue. When this happens its known by various names such as blue pine, blued pine, beetle kill pine and more. I find this pine ideal to turn when its almost dry. Too green and water or sap just pours out. Too dry and the pine is very soft and can be prone to tear out. Close to dry and it cuts beautifully with no sap being flung around and it requires very little sanding.

This piece is 4-1/2" tall and is hollowed to just under 1/8" inch thin.
