A friend from my smaller turning group gave me a branch of very old and dry Rhododendron from a large "tree" he removed many years ago.
The heartwood appeared to be purplish brown. But, when we cut a small section down the middle we saw amazing neon yellow sawdust with the golden yellow wood shimmering underneath.
I decided to use this small half-log to make a tiny natural edge ring bowl, just to see how the wood worked. A Natural Edge bowl uses the natural profile of the "log" as the top profile of the bowl and normally includes the bark along the rim.
This is one of the most amazing pieces of wood I have worked with. The iridescence is so vivid and the little bowl has a glass like finish. It is an extremely hard wood. The pattern on the ends looks like a rich, colorful sunset.
This bowl is perfect for rings. It's slightly heavier bottom makes it stable so it won't tip over.
