This Midas ( see my Dvd ) is the biggest I have made tip to tip 14inches
Made from New Zealand Rimu turned out of one piece without waste wood being added
The block was a big chunk of wood 350mm long 175mm wide and 230 deep, yes the size of a concrete block or close
The hard part was getting a piece of wood that had close grain and no defects
Then making sure it was dead square.
Obviously I was turning a lot of air so the tailstock was brought up so the rpms could be wound up a tad.
One I had tuned the underside complete with spigot I then strutted the wings with curved cut ply and braces back to the body .If I didnt do this the Rimu would have shattered .
Yes I still went at the top side of the wings with the skew before turning over being cross grain I dont know of any better way.
The inside has been gold leafed
The outside of the bowl was attached with pyrography I used a very fine wire wound in a coil there are approximately 500 zaps with the tip
The underside I applied lacquer then with a wire brush in a dremel twisted in a pattern it was then gilded with Gilders paste
The leaves were then carved the same layout in a mirror image stained then Glided
I hate to think how many hours ,was it worth it you tell me
