Maui Monkey Pod

Many years ago, they were trimming the Monkey Pod trees on the road to Lahaina in Maui; I stopped the rental car and picked up a few pieces and shipped them home...an interesting exercise for sure. In the mean time, I turned (lol) into a segmenter and the chunk of wood sat on my shelves for 15 yrs. A friend of mine came over to help me with my tool skills and we cut the chunk in half, he took one half, I turned this one with my newly acquired tool skills. It ended up being mostly sapwood but it did have some character. So news flash!!! Segmenter turns a chunk piece of wood...shhhhh, haha!!
We'll let you off for going over to the chunk side Russ, but only because we like you. The bowl looks triangular, does that new lathe of yours have some fancy features (or loose bearings) or is it just an optical illusion?

Beautiful bowl Russ! Obviously skills translate well. I bet it was nice to just throw a chunk on the lathe without having to spend ages prepping lol

Optical illusion Steve although it’s not round. It’s one of those elongated looking bowls!

Very nice, Russ. Just goes to show that segmenters can turn 'chunk' bowls like the rest of us 'chunk' turners ... but, we 'chunk' turners probably can't / won't turn a segmented bowl. Probably because we are too lazy to do all that preliminary glue-up work! :p

Never say never Tom! Over at SWT, the rule is two pieces of wood combined with glue qualifies as a segmented piece!! You likely are a segmenter and don't even know it!
