Masur birch hollow form

Masur birch hollow form

3” x 3”

Kept things simple with this form; with masur, the grain does all the talking 🤩. Got the walls down to about 1/8" and the weight under two ounces.
I have a bunch of Masur Birch log-ettes that I bought for a project that fell thru.
I’ll have to give some hollow forms a twirl
Definitely! The end grain has a cool starburst pattern, which is darker than the side grain. Creates a really nice contrast.

Beautiful piece.

I have only done one or 2 pieces with Masur Birch. I like taking a log section and turning it spindle-wise centered on the pith. First one I did like this I turned round and corked the pith ends with African Blackwood. Creates a very iris-like appearance. A stored away idea is to use some dye and create a sort of, Eye of Sauron, look. (Though that is more of a cat's eye look.)

Thanks, Craig! I’ve been thinking about trying an end grain turn with one of the pieces I have left. I can definitely see how the grain pattern would make a good iris 👀
