Marvin's Bowl

Marvin's Bowl

I recently turned and finished about 12 morphed Arbutus Burl bowls all with carved feet, these are turned once while green and finish sanded with water then set on the bench for about 10 days to dry and morph as they choose. This one bowl distorted so much on the bottom its 3 feet were in the air. These bowls all had bark seams but this one may have had the biggest and as you can see it pulled way out. Alison came up with the idea of turning 3 African Blackwood feet which are attached with 1/8" brass rod. The finished piece reminds us of Marvin the Martian's spaceship.
Great looking piece Marvin. How thick did you turn it and what dia. is the project. Again really like the shape.
Thank you, it’s 12” dia by 6” high and is turned to under 1/4” thickness everywhere, this helps prevent cracking. Arbutus/ Madrone will badly crack if it’s turned and left thick, it is typically boiled and then dried before final turning. The burl can really morph as it dries being once turned thin and not boiled.
