Maple Burl Box

Having fun making these boxes. This one is maple burl, about 4.5″ tall, 2.75″ diameter, and the interior is about 2″ diameter.

Lid is sliced off in an arc, and held on with 4 little magnets. The magnet get the grain and figure aligned just right between the body and the lid.

I get my magnets from totalelement.com These are 1/8" diameter x 1/8" long.
Holes are drilled with a trim router & 1/8" bit. Mounted in a home-made carriage on a "table" in the banjo. Gotta get things set up just right so the drilled holes are aligned when I do the base then mount the lid and drill those holes.
Magnets are glued in the base w/ a drop or 2 of Medium CA. After cured, stick magnets on those magnets (so the orientation is right), add CA to the holes in the lid, and put it together. If it happens right, the magnets glue in but you don't glue the lid to the base! I usually add a "insulating" layer of tape between the base & top magnets (extra CA will stick to the tape not the base).

Thanks. How do you line up the top magnets after placing bottom ones so that grain aligns? Sorry for what are probably pretty basic questions—never done this and really like it.

Before cutting the top off, mark lines along the sides where you want the magnets. Use the lines to carefully align everything.
