Maple box w/flame finial
Ken Grunke

Maple box w/flame finial

3 1/8" diameter, and 4 1/4" high, finished with 2 coats of Minwax wipe-on poly spun on the lathe with a disposable shopwipe rag.
The rim tenon on the bottom half is black cherry, just a short piece of end-grain wood glued onto the base before finish turning.
The flame was turned and carved from highly figured red oak, also from the firewood pile--colored with a red sharpie marker plus a fine-tip black marker for it's base.
I really like this one, Ken. The flame finial is very intuitive, and I like the way the top is ever so slightly elliptical compared to the round base (of course, that could be my old eyes). Such beautiful wood too.
