maple bowl

This maple bowl has a wonderful grain pattern, I was awed by its composition as I turned it. But it also has a wave figure, which is the holographic effect that you see depending on how the light falls on this bowl. I had to pull out my R. Bruce Hoadley's "Understanding Wood" to check on my use of grain and figure and I'm still not sure, except that it works for me. I made this bowls form simple so nothing could detract from the fact that it is elegant, and full of wonder.
It's is finished with a combination of tung oil, turpentine and polyurethane.
Greg, a beautiful fiddleback maple bowl, very well done. Fiddleback figure can be a bear to get clean cuts which are not torn out. You have done well. Very nice! Bill
