Why such a heavy duty tool reat?

I initially built this toolrest to help with large roughouts 12"-20". For the large ones it works great. And even for 6"-12" pieces a large rest such as this provides stability. The same toolrest and the U shaped guide are great for hollowing. In fact once I started using this setup for hollowing there was no going back, it was just a different totally controlled situation.

The U shaped guide takes all the side to side pressure so that you do not have to hold the gouge or the hollowing tool shaft tightly at all. It makes the work breeze along.

Could you how a piece on the lathe and how it helps for roughing? Forgive me but I cannot picture how it works.

Seriously, did you do your own metal working and welding? Occasionally, I find that it would be nice to have the capability to do that.
