HF for Epilepsy Foundation Auction

I was honored by Robin Costelle when he asked me to join a group of turners that were creating pieces specifically for an upcoming Epilepsy Foundation auction. This was my donation piece.

Upper Peninsula Curly Sugar Maple, sanded to 1200 and dyed with a mix of RIT that gave it a slight aqua tint. Colors vary from yellow, green, teal, blue and clear maple... so depending on which angle you are viewing the piece from - the predominate color changes. The acrylic finial was turned, buffed and then sanded to create frosted facets on an otherwise clear material. The piece is 4.75" in diameter x 4.25" high to the top of finial and is very light weight. Finish is multiple coats of gloss wipe-on-poly, buffed and given a coat of Renaissance wax.

As always, your comments, opinions and critiques are welcome!

Thanks for looking!
Yowza! That's really beautiful. Particularly like the subtle coloring that allows the natural beauty of the wood to come through.

Where do you get your acrylic? What size(s) diameter and length do you buy? Looks like it would be fun to turn and seeing what you have done, has the ideas flying.

Gary - glad the acrylic has given you some creative ideas to try! The acrylic I use was actually given to me a few years ago by an online friend over on Sawmill Creek. It came from a bank that was having the bulletproof glass replaced and he managed to grab a few chunks of the stuff which he later shared with me. I know there are places that sell acrylic online or you could give an acrylic pen blank a try just to see if you like using the stuff. Be advised - it does cling to everything!!
