Globe Tree

Made from 230 different kinds of wood that are made into the shapes of the states, countries, and continents the wood came from .The piece is 40" tall and the dome has a 28" diameter.

The trunk is turned from mahogany then the branches were carved.

The base is made from 6 different woods from each tree growing continent.

The dome is a geodesic dome, actually a dodecahedron, meaning a 12 sided ( pentagons)polyhedron. After contructing, I placed a 1" dowel in the center of 11 of the faces ( the 12th is the base). Then I glued 5 triangles on each pentagon, tipped up by the dowel, creating 55 flat surfaces in which to place my leaves.

About 25% of of the month it took me went into the conception and design.

I also created a book of all the woods used and a schematic to find them.

This is a well executed, ambitious piece. I like the way it engages the viewer and tests one's geographic knowledge. It's a beautiful combination of art and science.
