First Willow

First Willow

My first piece from a willow that came down during a recent ice storm. It was a big one so I have plenty to work through. It was my first time to work with willow. As I learned it's a challenge to work with but I think the outcome is worth it. 9" tall.
The heartwood is dark. I turned with pith down the center. The first trip to cut I got a few big limbs that had very little if any heartwood color. Pretty boring. Went back and cut into the trunk and the heartwood was dark and big enough to turn down the blank and still have enough for some good sized pieces. I'm a long way from the widest part of the tree which is about 34" dia so hopefully it gets better as I work it down.

I got a bunch of willow a couple years ago and it's just plain boring. Maybe I had a dud tree, or some different variety.
This is a great presentation of the heartwood/sapwood contrast.
