Elm For Jay Two

Outside has more character, that's for sure.
U. americana beyond a doubt. Slippery seems to be thinner in the sapwood overall. This one was, as are many of my things, the result of a "leaner" which troubled the farmer. It was on leased land, and when the landowner came to visit, I was pleased to be able to give her a piece made from the tree. She's older than the wood, but her daughter says she recalls playing under the fencerow elms while dad worked the field.

Done willow, it's a tossup on smell. Either is a toss-him-out here, where the shop is in the basement. They spend their first few drying days in the garage.

Hi George. Yep, the undercut is because beads or burns just didn't appeal to me on a piece showing good color like this one. Save them for the ordinary stuff is my philosophy. But I expect this to be a salad or serving bowl, so I thought a bit of help for the thumb was appropriate. Finish is one coat of linseed for the orange, one of Wipe-On Poly for water shedding. Scuffed after at 400 to remove a few shiny spots.
