Maple, Ebony, Acrylic Paint; 5.88" H X 5.75" D. Traces exhibit, AAW 2019; The design was inspired from fossils of Lepidodendron - giant trees of club mosses that existed during the Carboniferous period, about 359 to 299 million years ago. The trunks were covered in leaf scars, and these are the remnants of what the fossils show. My intent was to emulate the pattern of rock in which the fossils occur - the most colorful ones are from a formation in Poland - not quite as bright a red as I've created here, but a lovely oxidized rock, none-the-less.
