Dahlia

24" x 6" 470 pieces of Box Elder
Photo: Arlan Heiser
I know there is no turning involved, however, this process can be used to adorn a bowl either on the top side or bottom side of a bowl. I just might do that one day.
Took a lot of design work to build this thing. Of couse you start with a side view layout. Than a topside one. Came up with 30 segments (seemed like a nice size) started on a 1/4 piece of plywood for the back. Made templates for each layer out of thin wood. This is the easy part sanding on a vertical belt sander 470 petals. Followed by finiishing them up on a small 1/2 x 2" barrel sander on my fordom. Then hand sanded(after they were glued in place. The piece was spray laquered.
Too much, I can't imagine designing much less actually making the Dahlia. A winner.

My mind keeps reading your name as "maniac", now I know why. This is a very time consuming work of art. What a beauty! Keep up the good work.

Wow. I knew that there are people out there with a lot more patience than I but, WOW!!!! After looking at your work and other here I sure know that I am among artists. I don't know why I am here but I am. Spectacular piece - who cares if it is not turned.
I'll bet you even turned the hat in your picture. :))))
